Causes of colitis

Inflammation of the colon can be caused by a variety of factors, such as:

Infectious Colitis

It is cause by viruses and bacteria, such as Shigella, E.Coli, Salmonella, Campylobacter, and Clostridium difficile.

Ischemic Colitis

The arteries that supply blood to the colon have the potential to narrow (just like any other blood vessels). When that happens, the colon loses its blood supply and becomes inflamed.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease

An autoimmune illness, in which the body's immune system attacks the colon and causes inflammation.

Microscopic Colitis

The inflammation is caused by some layers of the colon wall becoming engorged with either collagen or lymphocytes.

Chemical Colitis

Chemicals injected into the colon may cause inflammation.
